SmartBand

Troy Cable has formed a public-private partnership with the South Alabama Electric Cooperative to enable advanced "smartgrid" energy services for 17,000 electricity customers in Crenshaw, Pike, and Coffee Counties. The network plans to support economic growth by providing redundant rings, including two robust backhaul routes to Atlanta, enabling the high-capacity broadband capabilities required to attract major businesses to the region.

Southeast Alabama SmartBand also proposes to:

  • Construct a new 595-mile fiber optic middle-mile network to offer speeds between 1Mbps and 1Gbps to anchor institutions and other broadband providers in Alabama.
  • Facilitate more affordable and accessible broadband service for up to approximately 53,000 households and 3,600 businesses by enabling local internet service providers to utilize the project's open network.
  • Provide direct connections to as many as 140 anchor institutions, including 50 public safety entities, 60 K-12 schools, 8 libraries, 4 community colleges, Troy University, 7 healthcare facilities, and 5 government buildings. The service area includes 500 additional community anchor facilities that could benefit from improved broadband service.
